Emotional Intelligence - Using Emotions

There’s more to emotional intelligence than just understanding and recognising emotions. You need to be able to use them to help drive the organisation forward.
Emotions impact every thought and decision we make. That’s why it’s important to be in the right frame of mind for the task at hand.
For example, say you’re about to tackle a detailed project. Enter into the task in a relaxed and calm state of mind. Mistakes are far more likely if you’re working in a noisy or stressful environment.
Imagine you’re about to lead a creative meeting. Do you think your team will be more inspired if they’re all sitting in uncomfortable silence or if you’ve all shared an amusing aside to release any tensions? Hopefully you picked option two. We’re not saying you have to have a party, but a simple energizer can put everybody in a more open and creative zone.
Respected psychologist Alice Isen discovered that the physician who was in a positive frame of mind was more likely to successfully diagnose a patient. The reason? Because they took the time to interact with and learn about the patient.
This works the same when dealing with colleagues and customers. You’ll provide a more positive contribution when you’re feeling content and motivated.
As a leader, emotional control is essential. During tough times say, prior to a key deadline it will be your positivity that will inspire your team. This can act as a source of strength to help get them over the line.
So before you start any task ask yourself “am I in the right mental zone to achieve the best results?”
